My name is Lisa Whaley. I joined CrossFit No Edge in September 2013 at the age of 48. I had heard all of the negative press on “cross fit” so I had my doubts on “buying in”. It did not take me long to see that this was the place for me. I have participated in the nutrition challenges as well as working out 5 days a week. Some may call me a “little” competitive, but I thrive on pushing myself to work hard and improve on my previous performances.
Since I have joined this program, I have lost over 20 pounds and have gone from a size 12 to a size 6. I did not measure inches before I started working out because I was so disgusted with myself and had a very low self esteem, so I have no idea of how many total inches I have lost. However, what is more important to me is not what I have lost, but what I have gained! Working out at CrossFit No Edge has been rewarding in so many ways. Jesse and Lauren are so supportive and encouraging. They really do give their all to each of their clients. They push us to do our best while instructing us on being safe. They will not let us do anything beyond our capability but will not let us cheat ourselves out of our full potential. Sometimes I look at the workouts that we will be doing and think “I am going to die today” but get such a feeling of accomplishment when I complete it. My self confidence has rebounded as well.
In addition to the support of Jesse and Lauren, the atmosphere they have created at this gym is indescribable. Everyone cheers each other on and is so positive towards one another. It doesn’t matter if you come to the 5:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. class, you will find that there is such a sense of camaraderie that pulls you in and makes you feel comfortable, no matter your level of ability.
If you are looking for a gym that will challenge you without being judged, then CrossFit No Edge is your home. No matter your age or ability, the work outs will be adjusted to your level for safety and ability. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish and pleased with the results you will see in your body, your spirit and your attitude in general.
My name is Hala Jennings. I joined CrossFit No Edge about 2 years ago. At first I was very skeptical about the whole crossfit world. I had friends that were hardcore in this thing and they would tell me about what they did during a workout and it scared me BIG TIME! I was always thinking “there is no way I would ever survive anything like that!” I have always enjoyed working out, but have been very intimidated by certain gyms and environments. Little did I know, I would actually come to LOVE crossfit and the workouts and surprisingly “crossfitters” were these amazingly motivating people who come together as a team. This was something I was definitely not used to in other gyms I had tried. I fell in love with the workouts and people at CFNE and kept going back.
About a year and a half ago I had to stop crossfit completely bc of a prior back issue. When my back finally started to heal I would go back to the gym here and there or I would go for a month and then stop again. It was definitely throwing my groove off and I completely got out of my routine. I had lost all motivation to keep moving forward. I was also scared that if I kept going my back would start giving me issues again. I wish I would have known that if I would have just stayed in it not only would my back be fine, but crossfit would actually HELP my back issues!
After some time I decided it was time to go “all in” at the gym and my friend Tricia told me about a nutrition challenge that Lauren was going to be starting and she wanted me to do it with her. So I agreed. And so it began, my nutrition journey with Lauren. With the extensive version of Lauren’s challenges, she literally does that hard part. She logs into my “myftnesspal” account and inputs the amount of calories I am allowed daily, along with my personalized macros. With the first challenge I did with her I lost 11 pounds, not to mention the inches I lost and how AMAZING I felt. I learned discipline and how I should be eating compared to how I was used to eating. The funny thing is, I am eating more now than I ever have! I am currently on my second extensive challenge with Lauren, and once again I am seeing HUGE results. I have managed between 2 vacations and over indulging a little too much throughout the summer to keep my weight off and continue to see results because of the work Lauren has put into customizing my plan. If you have not done a challenge with her yet, I strongly recommend that you do! She dedicates a lot of her time to prepping for us and catering to the differences that we all have. All we have to do is cook and eat! The amazing results just follow.
Along with the nutrition challenge I inquired about the recent one on one sessions that Lauren and Jesse are offering. Obviously with me trying to go “all in” and trying to be more consistent in my workouts, I needed all the help I could get. I started my one on one sessions with Lauren about a month and a half ago while going to the regular crossfit classes twice a week. I wanted to really work on getting my endurance better and being more comfortable in those kinds of workouts. I never have been able to run without stopping to walk, even on the shortest distance runs. Another challenge for me has been my upper body strength and core strength. I have been doing the one on one sessions with Lauren for about a month now and I am AMAZED at the results I am getting. I can run without stopping, I am lifting more than ever, and I feel great! I am really so surprised at the results in only a short about of time.
I also want to give a shout out to Jesse for pushing me during the regular weekly wods. I am up to three days a week in the regular classes and still doing one session with Lauren one on one a week. Lauren and Jesse both knew what I was capable of and believed in me before I even got started. I am so thankful for their time and dedication and helping me find the best version of myself. I am the happiest I have been with my body in a long time. I continue to succeed and amaze myself every day. I have Jesse, Lauren, and North Forsyth Training and Fitness to thank for that. I would not be where I am unless they were there by my side giving 200% to what they do. I can honestly see they love what they do and believe in helping people like me thrive.
I encourage anyone who has not tried CrossFit to give it a chance! If you need an extra boost or guidance in nutrition then give Lauren a chance to help you, and if you need some extra help or do not have the confidence yet to be in a group setting then let them help you one on one. You will not regret it!
Thank you everyone for the encouragement and motivation. I love my gym and my gym family!
On June 21st 2016 my daughter Avery convinced me to go to “cross fit” with her. At the time, I was pushing 308 pounds and had associated health issues. Being an athlete all my life and in this condition was really depressing. To be honest, I was a little nervous when I walked into the gym. I felt like the new kid entering the classroom mid- way through the school year. That feeling quickly disappeared as soon as I met Jessie and Lauren Foster. They made me feel comfortable and welcome. I signed a few wavier forms, let them know that I could come three days a week then started stretching. I noticed some in the gym were lifting bar bells and other heavy weights but Jessie let me know very quickly that I would not be touching any weights for some time. On June 21st, 2016, Jessie started me on what I call “a path to recovery”. For the first two months, Jessie, Lauren, Kansas and Jason monitored my performance and modified my workouts. My workouts consisted of pushups, air squats, sit ups, alternating toe touches, kettle bell swings, running, rowing, and pull up rings. The workouts are timed and the goal is to do as many reps as possible. I never felt awkward even though I am older than most, out of shape, cannot RX, weak at most exercises and outperformed by most, including pregnant women. The owners and trainers at CFNE really care about each member and their personal growth. In addition to working out, Lauren taught me key aspects of eating healthy. Basically, she said I could eat anything I wanted except things that came in a box, bag, bread, white rice, white noodles, and to cut out sweets for now. I am proud to say that I haven’t missed a single workout and along with my new eating habits I have lost 48 pounds. My road to recovery has not been easy mainly because my mind says I can but my body says not so fast. Kansas says it best, as long as you are moving you are making progress. I want to thank Cross Fit No Edge for getting me back on track and encourage others to join and start their own road to recovery.
“I started 2019 in a sad place in my life. I have a beautiful wife, awesome kids, wonderful family and friends, and a great job. Despite this, I was depressed and unhappy with myself. I was at an all-time high with my weight at 323lbs. I had just been given an epidural to deal with nagging back pain. I got out of breath and my knees hurt just from walking up a single flight of stairs. My blood pressure was averaging about 140/90. I was prediabetic with insulin at 97. My LDL cholesterol was 100, which is the recommended high and my liver functions were elevated due to years of obesity. At 41 years old, it was not what I wanted for myself, and I knew I had to make a change. I have done diets enough to know they work until you stop. Your eating habits have to change for life to keep the weight off. I've had a lot of experience with strength training in the past and liked lifting weights. There just never seemed to be enough time, and in my mind, I could always justify something else being more important.
I have a friend, Josh Angel, who is in phenomenal shape. He was a skinny guy when we met 9 years ago, but was obviously an athlete. He previously raced road bikes professionally, played semi-pro hockey, and played college sports. I have watched him transform over the years into a person with a great balance of muscle mass and lean conditioning after CrossFit became his go-to exercise routine about 6 years ago. In the fall of 2018, he told me, “Harley, I am in the best shape of my life. I have been more muscular. I have been in better cardiovascular shape, but I have never had such a balance of both.” That statement really made me respect CrossFit as a fitness regiment. It obviously wasn’t an option for me though, was it? I wasn’t in good enough shape to even start CrossFit. Besides, those people are like a cult and do some crazy stuff as a part of their workout. Through the fall and over the 2018 holiday season I continued to eat, drink, and stay, not merry, but miserable. Finally on January 2, 2019, I had enough. I decide I was going to start a new lifestyle that day and change my eating habits and start working out. I knew how to eat well, so that part was just a matter of making the change. I have a great gym in my basement, but I knew I wouldn’t stick to a weightlifting routine alone. I also knew I needed to do some cardio, and I freaking HATED cardio. If you saw me running, you had better run too, because it meant something was chasing me!
What would work and meet my needs? CrossFit sounded like a good balance of some things I loved and some things I needed, but hated. I researched 'starting CrossFit when you were in terrible shape'. I found success stories online and saw that it could be done. Josh recommended North Forsyth Training and Fitness. He said they paid a lot of attention to proper form and fundamentals which would help reduce risk of injury. I reached out to NFTF that same day and made an appointment to meet with Jesse Foster on Friday, 01/04/19. Jesse assured me I could start, and he could help me transition into CrossFit safely. I joked about it being a cult and he said, “When something has a huge impact on your life in a positive way, you want to tell people about it. That is why it has the stigma.” I asked Jesse if we could start Monday. 01/07/19 began my CrossFit journey. One year later, I am happy to say this is the fittest I've been in over 20 years. My annual physical was in December of 2019. My resting heart rate has dropped from 84 to 64. Blood pressure is averaging about 120/75. Insulin level is 6, and LDL is 75. Liver functions are normal again. I have no back issues and my knees feel much better. Today, I am 248lbs, and my waist has dropped from a size 46 to a size 38. The 75 pounds I've lost and the muscle I've gained is an amazing start, but I know the real payoff comes from staying the course long-term. I plan to continue to work to achieve my fitness goals. Jesse Foster and NFTF have helped me change my life in an amazing way. Jesse is an amazing coach and now someone I consider a friend. The people at NFTF are truly my gym family as they have cheered, encouraged, and inspired me along the way. Thank you all. I am very blessed to go through this journey with such amazing people.”
